Starting an online business – 5 tools you need

starting_an_online_businessWhen starting an online business there are certain tools that you need to become successful. In this article I’ll show you what tool all successful internet marketers use and why they use them.

If you are just starting out with online marketing, then you’ll quickly drop into information overload because everybody tries to direct you into a different direction and sell you something. Instead of chasing every new method to make money online you should be focusing on tools and strategies that the successful marketers use themselves.

Here in this article I want to show you five tools that every professional internet marketer uses and that you must have as well when starting an online business.

Your own domain

Having your very own domain name is important for several reasons. One major reason is search engine optimization. If you create a blog on your own domain and post good content on the blog, then you have good chances to get free traffic from search engines.

Another important reason for having your own domain name is branding. If you want to become successful online, you need to learn to brand yourself and not the business opportunities or products you are promoting. Creating your own brand is like creating a corporate identity. This includes the domain name, the colors you use in your design, the way you present yourself and other important factors.

Your domain name can either be your very own personal name, just like I have as my personal domain, or you can come up with a fantasy or brand name.

Your hosting

Once you have registered your domain, you need to get hosting for the domain. Sometimes the hosting provider also acts as a domain provider, so that you can register and host your domain in one place. When starting out, you can use low-cost hosting for $5 up to $10 per month. Make sure the hosting supports PHP and that you get at least one database with your hosting. This is usually nowadays standard.

A reliable and fast hosting is very important for your business. If your pages take too long to load, people will leave your sites. Once your business grows, you’ll also need to scale up your hosting or your websites will become too slow. Once you earn a full-time income, I suggest you get a managed server. Your own managed server means more security, more stability, faster loading of your sites and it also has a positive impact on search engine optimization.

Your WordPress blog

The very first website that you should start is your own WordPress blog. This blog will be your headquarter where you present yourself and your business. You can use your own blog to get people to know, like and trust you and to build up a loyal following. Your blog also attracts traffic from search engines, social sites and links that you or your readers place.

When starting your blog, concentrate on creating content and not on monetizing the blog. It doesn’t make sense to place ads on your blog if you have only a couple hundred visitors a month. Instead of placing ads on your blog you should place at least one signup form to your own email list on your blog. This way you can follow up with your subscribers and get them as returning visitors to your blog.

Your autoresponder

Always focus on building your own email list. You can check out every successful online marketer and you will notice that they all have a huge list of subscribers and that they all focus on getting even more signups to their list. Having your own email list puts you into a position of power. You can promote anything anytime you want and you can send traffic to your blog with the push of a button. That’s why list building is so important and why you need an autoresponder like Aweber.

Your own email list is also a tool to establish a relationship with your readers. The people out there need to get to know, like and trust you before they will buy from you. For this to happen you need to send out valuable content to your email list and not promote new products every day.

Tracking service

The last tool in my list is the tracking service. Without tracking your ads you won’t be able to tell where your signups and sales are coming from. You need to track all your ads, no matter if you build up free traffic or if you buy traffic. You can’t afford to waste your time and money on things that don’t work, so you must find out what works by using a tracking service like Clickmeter.

Tracking can be used for many parts of your online business. You can test and track different traffic sources, different ad spots, your follow up emails to your list, ad spots on your blog, different signup forms etc..

Using the above tools is absolutely a must if you want to become successful starting an online business. Please don’t try to use free tools, they are no good for a professional online business. Invest into professional tools that the top marketers use as well.
